Nurse: .....Don't you want to see him?
Jessie: Oh, I'm sure he can't have visitors.
Nurse: Yes, he can. He's down in X-ray, but he'll be back soon. Why don't you wait?
Jessie: Oh, I really don't want to bother him.
Nurse: You won't be bothering him. I'm sure he'd love to see you.
(A man in pajamas walks down the hall pulling his I.V. along behind him. Jessie starts to panic.)
Jessie: Gosh, I'd love to , I really would. But I'm on such a tight schedule.
Nurse: Would you like me to call down there and see when he---
Jessie: No! (Attempting calmness.) No, thanks a lot, but I really just wanted to drop this off. I'll be back soon, though. Real soon. Tell him that, okay?
Nurse (he's seen this before): Right. Real soon.
Jessie(to the people): I know. I know. What a wuss. But have you ever been to a cancer ward? Please reserve judgment until you have.
Exercise: Turn either one of the three mini-dialogues into ONE descriptive narrative. Use only indirect speech.
