　　After chipping through a wall which waseighteen inches thick, they found that a man had been trapped in the chimney. As itwas extremely narrow, the man was unable to move, but the firemen were eventuallyable to free him by cutting a huge hole in the wall. The sorry-looking, blackened figurethat emerged, at once admitted that he had tried to break into the shop during thenight but had got stuck in the chimney. He had been there for nearly ten hours. Justicehad been done even before the man was handed over to the police.

　　語言點:句子結構分析:after chipping through…作時間狀語，為時間狀語從句的省略式，可還原為afterthey chipped through…。Which引導定語從句，修飾wall,說明是“什么樣的墻”。That引導賓語從句，交代found的內容。

　　17.As it was extremely narrow, the man was unable to move, but the firemen wereeventually able to free him by cutting a huge hole in the wall.

　　由于煙囪太窄，那人無法動彈。消防隊員在墻上挖了個大洞，才終于把他解救出來。

　　語言點:句子結構分析:as引導原因狀語從句，說明小偷被困的原因。By cutting a huge hole in the wall是方式狀語。

　　18.The sorry-looking, blackened figure that emerged, at once admitted that he hadtried to break into the shop during the night but had got stuck in the chimney.

　　那個看來滿臉沮喪、渾身漆黑的家伙從煙囪里一出來，就承認頭天夜里他企圖到店里行竅，但讓煙囪卡住了。

　　語言點1:句子結構分析:第一個that引導定語從句，修飾figure。第二個that引導賓語從句，交代admitted的內容。

　　語言點2:sorry-looking不可直譯為“看上去對不住人的”，而應理解為“滿臉沮喪的”，經常被用來形容“相當狼狽”的樣子。

　　20.He had been there for nearly ten hours. Justice had been done even before the manwas handed over to the police.

　　他已經在煙囪里被困了將近10個小時。甚至在那人還沒被送交給警察之前，正義就已得到了伸張。

　　語言點1:句子結構分析:before引導時間狀語從句，注意，在翻譯時先翻譯后面的狀語從句，再解釋前面的主句比較符合漢語的表達習慣。

　　語言點2:hand over的意思是“移交”。
